Shot Composition at Home

This was an interesting assignment because I was really limited in my resources. I had to shoot with my phone since I don’t have a DSLR, but the quality on my phone is good enough where I felt I was able to full participate in this assignment even if I was limited. I was also limited when it came to subjects to shoot so I focused on my dog, youngest brother, and mother.

This isn’t actually the first photo story I have done. Last semester, I was in a photography class in the journalism department and a photo story was our last major assignment. Though they were the same idea, they were completely different experiences. This time i was much more limited to my house, whereas for the last assignment i spent taking pictures at a friends dinner party as well as the grocery store, setup, tear down, etc. I was also limited to only using my phone to take pictures since I don’t own a DSLR camera. I found it interesting that I was taking pictures of what I wanted to tell as a picture story. When I knew there’d be a lot of redecorating this day as we were getting new furniture, I saw it as an opportunity to show how the inside of the house changed and who contributed.

Life Inside

Pictured above is Ryan West. He is a freshmen at Cedar Springs high school, which means he is currently on a multi-week vacation spent at home. When taking his head shot, It wanted to make sure I sure the image evoked the mood that spending all day inside is like. I messed around with the lighting a few times and felt this helped portray a warmer feeling of being inside, warm, and safe.
